World Heritage on the doorstep. Every path starts here.

Assmannshausen sits where the Rheingau ends and the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site begins. Castles, abbeys and vineyards are often only minutes away. Here are our favourite routes, and in the evening a glass of Spätburgunder awaits you on the terrace.

Niederwald & Germania

The classic, right on our doorstep: through the landscape park to the Niederwald Monument, with views over the Rhine, the Nahe and the Rheingau. Float down to Rüdesheim by cable car, then drift home at your leisure by boat.

Rüdesheim & Drosselgasse

Old town, Drosselgasse and wine taverns: our lively neighbour, five kilometres upstream. The best part is getting there, by boat along the bank, in the evening too.

Burg Ehrenfels & the Mäuseturm

The ruins of Ehrenfels keep watch over the Binger Loch, while opposite, the Mäuseturm stands in the current. The path leads through the vineyards; there is nowhere to stop for a bite up there, so we are happy to pack you a picnic.

Castle cruise & the Loreley

From our landing, past the Mäuseturm and Burg Ehrenfels, in about an hour and a half. With a whole day to spare, carry on past Kaub and its island castle all the way to the Loreley.

The Rheinsteig

Step outside and you are already on your way: up through the vines to the Niederwald, or high above the river to Lorch. Coming back is easy, by train or boat.

Rhine cycle path

Flat along the bank to Lorch, or via Bingen into the Nahe valley. The ferries take bicycles, and yours can stay with us under cover and locked away.

Castles on the left bank

Rheinstein, Reichenstein, Bacharach, Oberwesel, St. Goar: on the left bank, one castle follows another. Our tip: cross over in the morning, when this side is in the sun.

Abbeys, castles & wine

St. Hildegard Abbey, Schloss Johannisberg, Schloss Vollrads, Kloster Eberbach: art, faith and winemaking sit close together here, each with its own wine shop. After the tasting, a taxi is the wise choice.

    Rheingau Gourmet & Wein FestivalAn international feast for food lovers, with Michelin-starred chefs and top winemakers from around the world.

    Assmannshausen in RotOur charming street festival right on the Rhine bank celebrates the village's famous Spätburgunder.
  3. June
    Magic Bike RüdesheimTens of thousands of Harley-Davidson fans gather for this cult meet in the World Heritage valley. In 2027 Magic Bike celebrates its anniversary early, at the end of May; motorbikes park right outside the house.
  4. July
    Music, fireworks & SektThe Rheingau Musik Festival brings world-class concerts to places such as Kloster Eberbach, “Rhein in Flammen” bathes the river in fireworks, best seen from a boat, and Eltville invites you to its Sekt festival.
  5. August
    Rheingau Wine Week in WiesbadenFor ten days, the state capital becomes “the longest wine bar in the world”.
  6. September
    Harvest wine festivalsRustic, convivial festivals in the old towns of Rüdesheim and Bingen. The most sought-after month of the year, so it pays to book early.
  7. October – November
    Federweißer & Glorreiche Rheingau TageFirst come the days of Federweißer, the season's young wine, in Rüdesheim; then VDP wine estates and leading chefs celebrate the best of cellar and kitchen.
  8. November – December
    Christmas Market of NationsRüdesheim's old town and the Drosselgasse become an international Christmas village.Advent on the Rhine
  9. 31 December
    New Year's Eve at Hotel SchönMusic, our evening menu, our own wines and Sekt, and a small firework display by the river. Open until the Sunday after New Year's Eve.

Good to know

In the morning the left bank of the Rhine is in the sun, in the afternoon the right. Our castle route follows the light: Bingen, Trechtingshausen and Bacharach in the morning, the Loreley, Kaub and Lorch in the afternoon, the terrace in the evening.

There is no bridge between Wiesbaden/Mainz and Koblenz. Car ferries run between Rüdesheim and Bingen, Lorch and Niederheimbach, and at Kaub, St. Goar and Boppard, among others. We have the timetables at reception.

  • The boat landing is approx. 200 m downstream from the hotel.
  • From Assmannshausen station, trains run hourly towards Koblenz and Wiesbaden.
  • To Rüdesheim: approx. 10 minutes by train or bus, or by boat, in the evening too.
  • Boat, chairlift and cable car are available as a combined ticket.

Kloster Eberbach with its abbey museum and wine shop; a stroll through Wiesbaden with the Kurhaus, the Kochbrunnen spring and the water-powered Nerobergbahn funicular of 1888; or Eltville, the town of wine, Sekt and roses, with its Electoral Castle. And a carafe on the terrace tastes just as good under cover.

And back to the river in the evening

Whichever path you choose, the day ends on the Rhine terrace, with a carafe from Weingut Karl Schön, the family wine estate, and the boats gliding past your table. For your room, it is best to book directly with us.
